A Representation Agreement is a legal document that appoints someone you trust to be your representative if you need help making decisions.

A Representation Agreement:

  • Eases the burden on family and friends – those you choose will have the legal authority to help you and carry out your wishes.
  • Avoids the involvement of government and other authorities in your personal and private affairs – don’t lose your rights through the imposition of adult guardianship (also called Committeeship in BC) or the Mental Health Act. If you don’t make your own arrangements, you are vulnerable to what others think is best FOR you.
  • Lets YOU have a say even if you are labelled as incapable. A Representation Agreement is based on self-determination – YOUR wishes, preferences and values.
