FINTRAC Bolsters Defenses Against Bribery and Corruption

Canada’s Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre (FINTRAC) has updated its guidance on politically exposed persons (PEPs) and heads of international organizations (HIOs), with a sharper focus on bribery and corruption risks. Alongside this, FINTRAC released new money laundering indicators to help businesses spot and report suspicious transactions.

These updates are vital for entities under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA). Bribery and corruption threaten financial integrity, and proactive risk assessments can prevent illicit funds from flowing through legitimate channels.

Key Highlights

  • PEP/HIO Guidance: Enhanced clarity on red flags like unexplained wealth or high-risk jurisdiction ties. Read more.
  • Suspicious Indicators: Spot patterns such as unusual cash flows, complex structuring, or disproportionate PEP-linked payments. Explore indicators.

Action Steps for Businesses

  1. Update AML/CTF policies with these tools.
  2. Train teams on new red flags.
  3. File suspicious transaction reports promptly.

For support, contact FINTRAC at 1-866-346-8722 or guidelines-lignesdirectrices@fintrac-canafe.gc.ca.

Stay compliant, protect your business and the economy.
