Consultation on Strengthening Canada’s Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing Regime

The Government of Canada has launched a public consultation to strengthen the country’s Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorist Financing (AML/ATF) Regime. This consultation is part of a parliamentary review of the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act (PCMLTFA). The government is seeking feedback from various stakeholders, including experts, civil society groups, government organizations, and the general public, to inform policy makers and the parliamentary review. The feedback received will be used to introduce legislative and regulatory reforms aimed at enhancing Canada’s AML/ATF regime. Submissions can be sent via email or mail, and there are options to indicate preferences for public disclosure and confidentiality. The government will compile a report summarizing the feedback received, which may be made public and shared with relevant authorities and officials. The review will explore measures to combat money laundering and terrorist financing, improve collaboration between different levels of government, strengthen investigation and prosecution capabilities, enhance information sharing, address regulatory gaps, and protect national and economic security. The consultation also includes consideration of recommendations from the Cullen Commission.
